Condolences

Condolence From: Israel Thompson
Condolence: I valued the short time that I knew Gunny. I know he used to enjoy coming to my office to visit my staff and we would talk "shop" in my office. Gunny led by example in his continuing support of our brothers-in-arms through various endeavours. I will miss his stories and his friendship but I will never forget him.

Condolence: It’s a sign of respect that Vietnam veteran Marine Sgt. Gene Lillie still refers to Vietnam veteran Gunnery Sgt. Gene Timmons as “Gunny.”

By the time I met Timmons in the late 1990s, a bent but strong man, most of the damage of the Vietnam war had been sowed and merely waiting for its eventual harvest.

He’d been wounded so severely in Vietnam, medics used maggots to eat away the infection. Read that sentence again for emphasis.

In an overseas hospital bed, Timmons was presented with his Purple Heart medal not by a Marine officer but by the Duke himself, John Wayne. (It was a running joke that the only proof of this was a snapshot of the actor with medal. Timmons wasn’t in it because he snapped the shot himself.)

Timmons was instrumental in developing the New Jersey Vietnam Memorial in Holmdel.

He was instrumental in developing the Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Williamstown, where he will be laid to rest on Saturday.

He was a major figure in creating the Dog Tag Project, with Gene Lillie and me, which returned dog tags obtained in Vietnam.

He traveled back to Vietnam several times, assisting with the repatriation of veterans’ remains. He eventually had to stop going back because of health reasons.

The demons, the remnants of the war in Vietnam that wracked the souls and minds of many veterans, affected Gunny’s body, weakening it and finally leaving it when he died Sept. 26.

He was one of the proudest Marines, one of the most honorable veterans and one of the best men I’ve ever had the pleasure to know.

I called him Gunny, too, now and then, and often said “Semper Fi” to him — and that he was, “Always Faithful.”

Condolence: So very sorry to hear of Genes passing. I first met Gene when we did the Last Patrol. I liked him immediately for his compassion and drive. I remember him introducing his family the night we stopped in South Jersey. He was so proud of all of you.
You will be in my nightly prayers.
