Obituary for Nelle V. Kearns (Cowder)

Nelle V. Kearns, age 72 of Mullica Hill, NJ, previously from Bethel, CT, died on October 15, 2017 after a 3 year battle with strokes. She was the beloved Wife of Thomas Kearns for 47 years. Survivors include Son David Kearns of Mullica Hill, Daughter Elizabeth Nold and husband Nick of Dublin OH, Granddaughter Athena Rex of Dublin OH, Brother Patterson Cowder of Holly Springs NC and Nieces. She was predeceased by her sister Donna Gray of Pittsburgh PA and her parents Donald and Alberta Cowder (nee Graham). Nelle was born in Clearfield, PA in 1945 and graduated from Wilkinsburg, PA High School in 1962. She received her B.S.N. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966. While at Penn she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and an officer in Women’s government. She received her M.S.N. degree from Western Connecticut State University. Nelle served in the USAF 1967-72 attaining the rank of Captain. She was stationed in Texas, Idaho (where she met Tom), Japan and England. Nelle and Tom were married on 2/21/1971 in Wilkinsburg, PA. Nelle and Tom made their home in Bethel, CT from 1973 to 2007. While there she worked as an R.N. and then as an LPN Instructor at Henry Abbot Vocational School retiring in 2006. She was active with the M.S. Society, Bethel Jaycee Women and Sigma Theta Tau honor society. Nelle was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she served as Scripture reader, Lay member to Annual Conference, president of UMW and on various committees. Nelle moved to Mullica Hill, NJ in 2007 with Tom and Dave. While there she was active with the M.S. Society. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she served as Scripture reader, Lay member to Annual Conference, Parish Nurse and in the Bell Choir. Services will be on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Trinity United Methodist Church on 284 Cedar Rd., Mullica Hill, NJ 08062. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM with Memorial Service at 11:00 AM.
