Thelma Hanssen passed away Friday, September 3rd, 2010. She died peacefully at home surrounded by loving family, and her long-term care provider and loving friend Cynthia Shields. Thelma resided in Wenonah all her life. Her husband, Helge, passed away in 1992. Thelma worked at Mobil Refinery for 30 years before retiring. Always active and involved, Thelma was an avid parishioner of the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Wenonah. In addition, she was a member of the Wenonah Historical Society, the Wenonah Woman's Club, and the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) #109, Woodbury. Her many hobbies included needlepoint, knitting, gardening, and crafting. Helping others was always at the top of her list of priorities. Among other charitable activities, she volunteered at the Kennedy Hospital gift shop, made and donated newborn baby blankets, and often donated to animal shelters. Thelma is survived by her nephew, Gary Nicolaisen, and his wife Dolores. Thelma was also an Aunt to Gary and Dolores's children: Jodi of Flemington, NJ, Michael of Sayreville, NJ, and Nick of Elm, NJ. Thelma was most proud of being called "Bestamore", which is Norwegian for grandmother, by her six grandchildren: Emma Johnson, Kate Johnson, Graig Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Alicia Livingston, and Antonio Livingston. Also survived by other family members, including nephew Tom Stokes and his wife,Patti, of Wenonah, niece, Wenche Karner of California, and niece Anne Lise Engum of Norway, and friends from New Jersey to Norway, Thelma treasured them all. Relatives and friends may visit with the family 6 to 8 PM Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010 at SMITH FUNERAL HOME 47 Main St., Mantua, NJ. Funeral services will be held at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 202 E. Mantua Ave., Wenonah, NJ on Friday at 11 AM. Interment will be in Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro, NJ. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.smithfhmantua.com
