Obituary for James A. Clanton

James Armour Clanton (Jim), 91, of Absecon, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 17, 2017. Jim is preceded in death by his wife Anna May, daughter Senga and son Steven. He is survived by his son J. Allan and grandson William (Cooper) daughter Lisa Spontak (Mike), Brooke Spontak and grandson Ryan M Clanton. He was one of six children and grew up during a terrible depression forcing the family to move to a farm where he worked tirelessly before and after school. Jim was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Jim was born in Schlater, Mississippi, served in the Merchant Marines, United States Army and graduated from Mississippi State University with a Chemical Engineering degree in 1952. Upon graduation he migrated north across the Masson Dixon Line to New Jersey to work for RCA in Camden, New Jersey. Jim retired from RCA at the age of 63 after 35 years of dedicated service and holds numerous patents and was a key contributor to the success of the Apollo Space Program. Jim loved to frequent Atlantic City where he enjoyed playing poker and hitting the jackpot on his favorite slot machines, whose identities have been passed on only to his kin. Given his passion for poker he relocated from Wenonah, NJ to Absecon, NJ in 2004 to be close to the casinos where playing poker became his second career. Jim will be laid to rest at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Woodbury, NJ during a private ceremony with family. In lieu of flowers the family asks Memorial donations be made to the: Steven Cooper Clanton Memorial Scholarship c/o Gateway Regional High School 775 Tanyard Rd Woodbury Heights, NJ 08097
